Notice of Proposed Free State PTA Bylaw Amendments 

Dear Free State PTA Members,

We are pleased to inform you of the proposed amendments to the bylaws of the Free State PTA, which will be presented for review and voting at our upcoming annual convention. The convention will be held on July 20-21, 2024, at the Maritime Conference Center.

The proposed bylaw amendments are aimed at enhancing our organizational structure, improving operational efficiency, and aligning our policies with the latest best practices in nonprofit governance. Key proposed changes include:

  1. Article IV, Section 5C: Governance

  • Current: Currently does not exist.

  • Proposed: C. Each constituent association organized under the authority of Free State PTA shall adopt bylaws for the governance of its association. Such bylaws shall not conflict with Free State PTA or Maryland state nonprofit corporate laws and are subject to review by Free State PTA.

2. Article VI, Section 2A: Eligibility

  • Current: A. Each officer shall be a current member of an active local PTA chartered by Free State PTA

  • Proposed: A. Each officer shall be a current member of a local PTA chartered by Free State PTA

 

3. Article X, Section 1E.3.a: Committees

  • Current: a. consists of the treasurer, who shall serve as chair, the president-elect, and three (3) additional members from the board of directors; and

  • Proposed: a. consists of the treasurer, who shall serve as chair, the president-elect, and  five (5) additional members of which a minimum of three (3) are on the board of directors; and

 

4. Article X, Section 1G: Committees

  • Current: Term Limitations. No committee member shall be eligible to serve more than two (2) consecutive terms on the same committee. A committee member who has served more than one-half (1/2) of a term shall be credited with serving that term.

  • Proposed: Delete paragraph in its entirety

 

Members are encouraged to review the detailed text of the proposed amendments which are available by clicking on the buttons below. 

We invite all members to participate in the discussion by sending delegates to our upcoming convention to participate in the voting process. Your input is invaluable in shaping the future of our organization. A virtual Q&A session will be held before the convention to facilitate informed discussion. Details for joining the session will be sent to all members at a later time.

We are thrilled to announce the establishment of the Free State PTA Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) Committee. As we strive to foster a welcoming, inclusive, and equitable environment for all PTA members, we recognize the importance of actively promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in all aspects of our work.

We believe that by coming together as a collective force, we can make meaningful strides toward creating a more equitable and inclusive school environment for all. To achieve our goals, we are inviting passionate and dedicated individuals from our parent and teacher community to join the DEIJ Committee.

 

No prior experience or expertise in DEIJ work is required – all that is needed is a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice within our school communities. Whether you are a parent, teacher, staff member, or community ally, your voice and perspective are invaluable in this journey toward positive change.
